Who is Brett Kavanaugh, Trump’s Nominee to the Supreme Court?

  • US President Donald Trump congratulates his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh

On Monday night, President Donald Trump announced his nominee for the newest Supreme Court justice, Brett Kavanaugh.

"One of the Senate's highest constitutional responsibilities is to provide advice and consent on nominations to the Supreme Court, and I look forward to the Senate fulfilling this critical duty through a fair and thorough confirmation process".

In a press conference, Democratic senators took aim at Kavanaugh and criticized his rulings on hot-button issues like reproductive rights.

"Now is the time for the American people to make their voices heard, loudly, clearly, from one end of this country to the other". She was one of several Harvard Law professors whom the Globe reached out to for comment on Kavanaugh.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell called Kavanaugh "an impressive" nominee who is "well qualified" to sit on the nation's highest court.

The selection of Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court will have less of an impact on November's midterms than you think.

Antonin Scalia, who served as an associate justice from 1986 to his death in 2016, earned $60,000 in noninvestment income in 2014. A simple majority is required. It is also possible, however, that Democratic senators such as Joe Manchin (W.Va) and Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.), who are up for reelection in red states, could break party lines and support Kavanaugh. With ailing Republican John McCain unable to vote, they have little wiggle room.

The newly-nominated justice on Tuesday went to the US Capitol to begin meeting with senators ahead of any confirmation hearings to explain his positions.

"The things to be anxious about are the future cases. that's where a Justice Kavanaugh, if confirmed, can make a difference", said Fitzpatrick.

"Let's put it this way: There were some who have been on the list that I would have had a very, very hard time supporting, just based on what was already publicly known about them", Murkowski told Politico.

Democrats are going to build a grandstand from which they will try to block the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Kavanaugh grew up in Washington as the son of a schoolteacher. "If Judge Kavanaugh is confirmed, women's freedom to make decisions about their bodies, reforms to our health care system, the quality of our air and water, and much more will be at risk".

As a member of Ken Starr's staff, Kavanaugh pushed for an aggressive prosecution of President Clinton.

Later he was part of Bush's legal team working on the 2000 Florida recount, which resulted in Bush's winning the presidency.

Kavanaugh said he has worked as a school tutor for struggling kids.

Kavanaugh's required disclosure forms deal in broad ranges, so it's hard to get an accurate picture of his financial situation (with good Nationals seasons tickets running as much as $6,000 Kavanaugh could have been buying tickets for ten friends, or almost three dozen). Special counsel Robert Mueller, of course, is now investigating potential collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.

University of IL law Professor Andrew Leipold worked with Kavanaugh as part of independent counsel Kenneth Starr's legal team back in the 1990s, investigating former President Bill Clinton.
