  • Mysterious black sarcophagus is unearthed in Egypt and we don’t know who’s inside

A layer of mortar between the lid and the body of the sarcophagus indicated it had not been opened since being closed in antiquity, Supreme Council of Antiquities general secretary Dr Mostafa Waziri said.

It was discovered by an Egyptian archaeological mission after an ancient tomb dating back to the Ptolemaic period was uncovered during a construction dig.

The mysterious coffin is 265cm (104in) long, 185cm (72in) tall, and 165cm (65in) wide, making it the largest that has ever been found in the city of Alexandria.

Ayman Ashmawy, head of the ancient Egyptian antiquities Sector, said on Facebook that the tomb was found at a depth of five meters. Archaeologists recently unearthed a 2200-year-old gold coin depicting the ancient King Ptolemy III, an ancestor of the famed Cleopatra. The finding is rare, and experts are trying to determine what is inside it.

The mysterious sarcophagus was discovered close to an alabaster sculpture of a head.

They belonged to an unidentified Ancient Egyptian Princess and the head and body of a crocodile from the River Nile.

Scientists also believe that they may have found the secret of the Great Pyramid's near-perfect alignment.

In February, archaeologists announced the discovery of a 4400-year-old tomb near the pyramids.

He further remarked that if they can not lift it due to its heavy weight, the area below and surrounding the sarcophagus will be dug, then, its cover will be lifted first followed by its body, referring that the latest scientific means will be used in this process in the presence of the Ministry of Antiquities' experts. Late a year ago, archaeologists also revealed that they had uncovered the graves of four children at an ancient site in Egypt.
