  • Walmart mulls video streaming service to rival Netflix, Amazon: report

Between Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and the countless other streaming services to emerge in recent years, TV and movie fans have reached a point where it's downright impossible to keep up with everything, but don't get your hopes up that it's all gonna slow down anytime soon.

Multiple media outlets are picking up on a story first reported by The Information, citing anonymous sources who claim the big box retailer could make an insurgency into the digital entertainment sphere.

Walmart is considering the launch of a subscription-based video streaming service to rival Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, according to a report Monday. Sport is seen as an important reason for this, with Sky and BT dominating the United Kingdom market for Premier League rights, for example.

We have seen a decline in revenues for pay TV, a fall in spending on new programmes by our public service broadcasters, and the growth of global video streaming giants.

Walmart Reportedly Eyeing Low-Cost Streaming Service to Rival Netflix, Amazon

With the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5 and ITV committing less money to new content than it has over the past 20 years, and services like Amazon moving into spaces (such as Premier League football coverage) traditionally dominated by traditional broadcast TV players, it's starting to appear increasingly bleak for the old guard.

Among those with a TV set in their household, some 52% of households in H1 2018 had a broadband-connected smart TV or a TV connected to the internet via another device such as a set-top box, games console, laptop or streaming media stick through which they can access video-on-demand services. The service could even include an ad-supported free tier.

As always with these leaks, it is important to remember that many companies look at doing many things.

It's unclear whether Walmart will actually move forward with the plan, or where the content would come from.
