  • Scarlets head coach Wayne Pivac walks with Leigh Halfpenny

"The current Scarlets boss will take over from Warren Gatland, who is scheduled to step down after the 2019 Rugby World Cup when he will have served more than 12 years at the helm", read the WRU statement posted on their website.

The reflex reaction whenever a significant coaching vacancy crops up is often to look to New Zealand for candidates.

Wayne Pivac has been appointed as Warren Gatland's successor as Wales head coach after next year's World Cup, the Welsh Rugby Union has announced.

55-year-old Pivac previously coached Fiji between 2004 and 2007. "I see myself as a Welsh coach", Pivac said.

Pivac has performed the same role at the Scarlets since 2014, masterminding a Guinness Pro12 title a year ago and securing passage into the semi-finals of the Champions Cup in the same season.

Wayne Pivac has been appointed as the new Wales Rugby team head coach. He was appointed Scarlets assistant coach in 2014 before taking over from Simon Easterby as head coach when the former Ireland worldwide left to take up a role with the IRFU.

"I know I'm following in the footsteps of someone who is held in extremely high regard, not only by the Welsh public but also by the players who have played under him", Pivac said.

"I felt more comfortable putting my name forward and I feel as if I am a Welsh coach".

"Wayne will bring the holistic approach to the job we are looking for and will be immediately ready to pick up where Warren leaves off - he offers the complete package and we are delighted to have secured his services".
