British police say they have finally found the source of the deadly nerve agent that killed a woman and left her partner fighting for his life in Amesbury, England: A bottle.

Mr Rowley, 45, remains in hospital in Salisbury in a serious but stable condition after falling ill on 30 June.

"On Wednesday, 11 July, a small bottle was recovered during searches of Charlie Rowley's house in Amesbury", police said in a statement, four months after a former Russian spy and his daughter were poisoned with the same substance.

"However, we can not guarantee that there isn't any more of the substance left", said Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu, head of United Kingdom counter-terrorism policing.

"However, we can not guarantee that there isn't any more of the substance left and cordons will remain in place for some considerable time", the spokesman told The Independent.

They are working on the theory that Mr Rowley and Ms Sturgess found a discarded batch, which then contaminated them.

He declined to give further details on the bottle, but police said inquiries were ongoing to establish where the bottle came from and how it came into Rowley's possession.

The discovery of the bottle comes as the Foreign Office announced independent chemical weapons experts would arrive in the United Kingdom next week to assist with the investigation.

The UK has invited experts from the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to independently confirm the identity of the nerve agent.

Today's discovery has been called "significant and encouraging" by Wiltshire Police.

The search for the container was conducted by officers from Scotland Yard's counter-terrorism command.

"Given the ongoing incident in Salisbury and Amesbury, we are taking highly precautionary measures to ensure public safety", police said, referring to the poisoning of two more people in Amesbury last month.

"This will free up some Wiltshire Police officers to get back to supporting day-to-day community policing".

Public Health England reiterated its advice to members of the public and urged residents not to touch, or pick up, unfamiliar objects.
