  • Taiwan spared as Typhoon Maria weakens

Taiwan's UNI Air cancelled around 70 domestic flights on Tuesday while two other airlines have cancelled flights to the Japanese island of Okinawa. Fishermen in coastal Keeling also brought in their catch and secured their boats ahead of the storm, one day after dozens of ferry services to outlying islands were cancelled.

More than 270,000 people had been evacuated from their homes in Wenzhou City, Zhejiang Province, as of Wednesday morning.

On Tuesday, more than 2,000 soldiers were deployed to evacuate almost 3,500 people across Taiwan amid warnings of floods and landslides.

The central government issued red alerts for landslides in two mountain villages of northwestern Taiwan's Hsinchu county, effective Wednesday.

Schools and offices were closed in parts of Taiwan Wednesday, July 11, as Typhoon Maria skirted the island bringing torrential rain and powerful winds.

The typhoon also caused the cancellation of 138 global flights and 170 domestic flights.

Maximum wind speeds have been measured gusting up to 59.3 meters per second (132.6 miles per hour) in Xiapu County's Sansha district, stated Fujian Meteorological Bureau in a Weibo post.

Taiwan is often hit by typhoons from June through November each year.

They form as tropical depressions gather strength from the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean or the South China Sea, before weakening over the hills of south-east China and south-east Asia.

In western China's in Sichuan province, heavy rains and landslides prompted the closures of the popular Mount Emei and Jiuzhaigou tourist destinations.

Heavy rainfall has caused flooding and landslides in China, with damage to infrastructure and property reported but no loss of life as yet.
