  • Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore evacuated due to possible TB exposureMore

The all-clear has been given on the Johns Hopkins campus after a hazmat scare Thursday after a small tube with a frozen sample of tuberculosis was dropped and the lid came off.

John Hopkins is planning an internal review. The sample was "equivalent to a few drops", according to Dr. Landon King, executive vice dean of the school. Fire officials had been concerned that the sample might spread through the buildings' heating and cooling system, but Hopkins quickly shut the system down.

"Tuberculosis (TB) is caused by a bacterium called Mycobacterium tuberculosis". The disease is also considered extremely contagious.

Vials of the unsafe tuberculosis bacteria broke at Johns Hopkins Hospital Thursday, causing a stir of activity around the complex as hazmat personnel tried to contain any contamination of the bacteria that is known to cause life-threatening illness.

"When I saw the text, I knew it was something serious", Robinson told the paper. This event was followed by immediate evacuation of many buildings of the hospital, however, the officials stated that presently there is no risk of anyone contracting the infection. Tuberculosis is treatable in most cases, but many people at the hospital are already immune compromised, putting them more at risk.

Over 9,000 tuberculosis cases were reported in the United States in the year 2016, as per the latest report of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Authorities responded to reports that a small amount of tuberculosis bacteria may have been released at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore on Thursday afternoon, after a latch failed on a container, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.

This situation was leaked to the press and a thorough investigation was launched into area research facilities.
