Trump visit to United Kingdom begins on awkward note

He said London mayor Sadiq Khan, who has allowed protesters to raise a giant diaper-clad balloon mocking the U.S. president next to parliament on Friday, was doing "a awful job" on crime.

More than 10,000 pounds ($18,400) was raised via a crowdfunding site to get the six-metre inflatable up in the air - smashing the original target of $9,000.

The comments will plunge the transatlantic "special relationship" to new lows, making for extremely awkward talks with May when the two meet at her country retreat of Chequers later on Friday.

While Trump's trip was not the full state visit he was originally promised, he was heralded by military bands on his arrival in the country and at Blenheim, and he is scheduled on Friday to have tea with Queen Elizabeth. I haven't been there in a long time.

According to recent surveys by non-partisan British polling organization YouGov, only 11 percent of Britons said they thought Mr. Trump was a "great" or "good president". I am just saying I think he would be a great prime minister.

Trump personally criticized May's handling of Brexit, saying that her so-called soft-Brexit approach went "the opposite way" to what he had recommended and that it was "very unfortunate".

President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have a complicated history with hand-to-hand contact, but after their most intimate hand grip to date on Tuesday, the couple has shared yet another surprising public display of affection. The U.S. president is expected to attend a formal dinner at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire with the business leaders, along with the senior members of the cabinet.

His comments are a departure from his remarks earlier in the day when he insisted, "I think they like me a lot in the U.K" although he still insisted even after his Baby blimp lament that real Brits "love the President".

"It's an opportunity to reach a free trade agreement that creates jobs and growth here in the UK and right across the United States", May told the guests at Blenheim Palace.

Trump told The Sun newspaper on Thursday - in an interview that was published as he was being feted by May at an opulent dinner at a country palace - that he felt unwelcome in London because of protests, including plans to fly a giant balloon over Parliament on Friday that depicts him as an angry baby in a diaper.

His comments came at the end of a tumultuous few days for May, during which two senior ministers resigned in protest at her plans for trade with the European Union after Britain leaves the bloc next March.

"Clearly, the really hard Brexiters, the people who regard Theresa May as being a traitor, for keeping any sort of deal going with the European Union, they're going to love this", Lee said.

Trump says May's former foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, would make an "excellent" prime minister, speaking just days after Johnson resigned his position in protest of May's Brexit plans.

But Mr Trump said the prime minister is a "very good person" denying claims he called her a bossy schoolteacher, or said she was boring. So I think allowing millions and millions of people to come into Europe is very, very sad.

"We expect the highest standards of each other".

Donald Trump's criticism of Theresa May's Brexit strategy has sparked a backlash from United Kingdom politicians - including some government ministers.
