  • World Leaders Meet For NATO Summit In Brussels

"Once the Brexit process is concluded and perhaps the United Kingdom has left the European Union, I don't know what they're going to do but whatever you do is OK with me, that's your decision", Trump said.

Trump had suggested in the interview that the recently departed foreign secretary, Boris Johnson, would make a good prime minister and that the current Brexit framework would prevent a US-UK trade deal. "I think they like me in the UK". I know they have had a lot of resignations.

"The spirit of friendship and cooperation between our countries, our leaders and our people, that most special of relationships, has a long and proud history", she said, adding that the United States was "not just the closest of allies but the dearest of friends".

"I was very saddened to see he was leaving government and I hope he goes back in at some point".

In an interview with the newspaper The Sun, published late Thursday, he undercut Prime Minister Theresa May on several fronts. "She's got a great and handsome grace about her".

"My wife is a tremendous fan of hers".

As for her not taking his advice on Brexit negotiations, Trump said it was merely a suggestion.

Trump accused the prime minister of ignoring his advice on Brexit negotiations, in remarks that echoed Johnson's private barbs that the U.S. president would do a better job than May in negotiations. "She probably thought it was too brutal".

Trump later got The Sun journalist who conducted the interview, Tom Newton Dunn, who was sitting in on the Chequers press conference, to agree that he had said nice things about May, though he complained that these were not in the headline.

"I don't think he would have done that if I were president", Trump responded.

There were no immediate specifics on what Trump said he had achieved, and French President Emmanuel Macron quickly disputed Trump's claim that North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies had agreed to boost defense spending beyond their existing goal of 2 percent of gross domestic product.

"The deal she is striking is a much different deal than the one the people voted on", he said.

The tough rhetoric against a core ally comes just days before Trump is set to meet one-on-one with Putin in Finland.

"We have this stupidity going on, pure stupidity, but it makes it very hard to do something with Russia because, anything you do, it's like: "Russia, oh he loves Russia", Trump said. I will absolutely bring that up.

Earlier, activists floated a six-meter-high blimp outside parliament depicting the US president as an orange, snarling diaper-wearing baby.

The NATO communique says that two-thirds of countries have plans to meet the spending target by 2024, and that, "all Allies have started to increase the amount they spend on defence in real terms".

Trump first met May Thursday night and the pair spoke for about 90 minutes and attended a state dinner.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Thursday, though, said the discussion "made NATO stronger", as it "created a new sense of urgency".

He then took a question from Fox News regarding his upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Instead, a series of events - a black-tie dinner with business leaders, a meeting with May and an audience with Queen Elizabeth II - will happen outside the bustling city, where Mayor Sadiq Khan has been in a verbal battle with Trump.

During Friday's news conference, Trump spoke about how immigration is detrimental to Britain.

The White House scrambled to clean up Trump's comments.
