Trump brands Germany a "captive of Russian Federation", days before he meets Putin

  • Donald Trump takes the fight to NATO

"I think it's very sad when Germany makes a massive oil and gas deal with Russia where we're supposed to be guarding against Russia", Mr. Trump said at a breakfast with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg.

Hannity pointed out that Germany is spending billions of dollars on an energy pipeline between them and Russian Federation, and that the country's former chancellor, Gerhard Schröder, is the one leading the business effort.

Trump declared that a joint natural gas pipeline venture with Moscow has left Angela Merkel's government "totally controlled" and "captive to Russian Federation".

"This has been going on for decades and it is disproportionate and not fair to the taxpayers of the United States and we're going to make it fair".

The president's beef was with the Nord Stream 2 pipeline that would bring gas from Russian Federation to Germany's northeastern Baltic coast, bypassing Eastern European nations like Poland and Ukraine and doubling the amount of gas Russian Federation can send directly to Germany. Naturally, this one has people concerned the world order as we know it could be upended by next week.

Meanwhile, NATO members in Europe contributed a total of $249.7 billion to their defense budgets and spent an average of 1.46% of GDP. "I have great confidence they'll be spending more".

In the photo were: German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, Trump, and British Prime Minister Theresa May.

He said the United Kingdom contributes $61 billion, Germany $51 billion and Canada "an embarrassing" $21 billion. While Republicans have not been pushing back on the president, back home, they are pushing back on his rhetoric when it comes to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation. "For many years I dreamed of freedom, just as many others did - also of the freedom to travel to the United States", she said then. Germans wouldn't agree with that.

In a bid to avoid a row, Stoltenberg replied: "Nato is an alliance of 29 nations and there are sometimes differences..." One rear-guard attempt to disrupt the pipeline would have the European Union extend its energy-market regulations to pipelines such as Nord Stream 2 when only one end touches EU soil.

Hours after the breakfast, Merkel and Trump appeared to play nice as they met along the summit's sidelines.

'President Trump, who spoke first, raised the issue not only to achieve 2 percent, today, but a new barrier - 4 percent, ' Bulgarian President Rumen Radev told reporters, according to the wire service Reuters.

"And the former Chancellor of Germany is the head of the pipeline company that's supplying the gas".

Around eight members of the 29-country military alliance are expected to reach the 2 per cent target this year.

"Germany is totally controlled by Russian Federation because they'll be getting 60 to 70% of their energy from Russian Federation and a new pipeline", Trump told Stoltenberg. American officials say the U.S.is itself short of that mark, spending 3.3 percent of its GDP on defense. "Must pay 2% of GDP IMMEDIATELY, not by 2025".

On day two, leaders will welcome non-NATO partners including Afghan President Ashraf Ghani and Ukraine's Petro Poroshenko to the alliance's new glass-and-steel headquarters as they seek to focus on policy rather than politics.
