Khan, who has been a persistent critic of the president, approved the request after thousands of people signed a crowdfunding campaign that raised more than $18,000 for the "Trump baby" zeppelin.

The balloon won't be allowed to fly this high over the city - but it will be large.

London newspaper the Evening Standard carried a statement from a spokesman for Kahn, which said: "The Mayor supports the right to peaceful protest and understands that this can take many different forms". The mayor's operations team met with the activists and gave them permission to use the square as a "grounding point", the outlet reports.

That's a reversal from last week, when city officials denied the group permission to fly the "Trump Baby" blimp over Parliament Square.

Khan has been outspoken in his opposition to Trump's visit.

Mr Murray has described the balloon as an "obscene mutant clone of the president" and says it will "hold up a huge mirror of truth" to the world.

A spokesman for the Nona Hurkmans group, which is behind the protest, said: "We are just a small group of friends who set out to use humour to take a stand against the rise of racist and fascist politics both here in the United Kingdom and over in the US".

"We have been genuinely overwhelmed and touched by the incredible levels of support we have received for our project". Still, it's a victory for those who raised over £16,000 to make this happen.
