His arrival comes just days after he said the United Kingdom was in "turmoil" and "it is up to the people" whether Mrs May stays as prime minister.

"I would say Brexit is Brexit, the people wanted to break it up so I would imagine this is what they will do".

"As two nations, we are safer, more prosperous and more creative when we work together and I am looking forward to this week's important discussions".

Mrs May will be looking to improve her often publicly strained relationship with the USA president as she pushes for a post-Brexit trade deal with America.

The Stop Trump Coalition accused the president of being "too scared to face protestors".

"When we leave the European Union we will begin to chart a new course for Britain in the world and our global alliances will be stronger than ever", May said ahead of Trump's visit. After the visit, Trump will decamp to Finland for a one-on-one with Russian President Vladimir Putin on July 16.

He said: "The UK loves me, in fact my mother was from the UK, they love me there even if they are not treating us well with trades, but they will".

"Boris Johnson's a friend of mine, he's been very nice to me, very supportive and maybe I'll speak to him when I get over there". The first Labour Live event has been organised by the Labour Party.

"From the public, the welcome will be far from warm", he told lawmakers on Wednesday, noting there would be protests across the country against Trump's "abysmal record on human rights, his repugnant attitude toward women and his disgusting treatment of minorities".

Speaking about the protests - that includes a giant balloon baby flown over Parliament - Trump told reporters in Brussels that he was well-regarded by Brits.

Tens of thousands of people are expected to march through London in protest against Mr Trump's visit and some of his actions during his first 18 months in power.

A campaign is also underway to get "American Idiot", a 2004 song by the United States punk rock band Green Day, to the top of the UK Singles Chart.

The prime minister will host Mr Trump and his wife Melania at a lavish dinner at Blenheim Palace on Thursday evening.

On Friday, demonstrators are expected to gather near Chequers, the Prime Minister's country residence, where May and Trump will hold a working lunch.

Russia, Brexit and the Middle East are set to top the agenda.

Later, Trump will take tea with Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle, a home to the royals for 1,000 years, part of a tour created to keep him away from protesters.
