Tour de France 2018 - Wiggins: 'Dignified' Froome still favourite after salbutamol case

  • This July 4 crash resulted in both Mark Cavendish and Peter Sagan exiting the Tour de France

While Sky's top placed rider is Geraint Thomas three seconds off the lead, 2017 Giro victor Dumoulin is just 11 seconds down, but perhaps Bardet is the man with the most to smile about at this stage.

Putting their most popular domestique into the race lead would have been a nice touch, but yesterday's main objective was to win back as much time as possible for Chris Froome, who lost 51 seconds to some of his key rivals when he rode into a roadside ditch on stage one.

Monday's third stage is a 35.5km team time-trial where the agenda for a tricky first week should be set with some significant time gaps expected on a slightly rolling course around Cholet in the same region as the first two stages.

Martin fractured two vertebrae on stage nine of last year's race, but still managed to challenge in the overall.

Froome, who fell into a ditch near the end of Saturday's opening stage, arrived safely with most of the peloton.

Vincenzo Nibali's Bahrain-Merida squad were 11th on the day, giving up 62 seconds to Sky, while Romain Bardet's AG2R La Mondiale team finished 12th, 71 seconds off Sky's time. You can never tell who is going to be on a good day or not, but all in all it worked out well for us.

Overall, Froome is in 18th place, 55 seconds off the pace and still 44 behind 2017 Giro d'Italia victor Dutchman Tom Dumoulin, who with Team Sunweb only lost seven seconds to the Briton on Monday. I need to go into the race and just see what happens. They were only seven seconds back and on a similar trajectory to us so you do have to wait.

The latter's hopes of reclaiming the maillot jaune took an early hit, however, as he lost contact with the back of the Quick-Step train and the team split apart early in the stage.

"One day you gain, one day you lose".

"I'm just relieved to be racing, and want to draw a line in the sand now", Froome said as his team boss Dave Brailsford added that Sky were used to negativity in France where Froome had been jeered and doused with urine in the past.

However he won a stage later in the race, coming close on other days too, and finished fourth overall behind victor Geraint Thomas.

"Sky gained on the final part of the course, stopping the clock in 38'50" but their clubhouse lead did not last long as BMC Racing dug deep on the final run-in to shave another four seconds off.

"To be honest I didn't even think about it (the yellow jersey), it was just about winning the stage".

Sky were second off the start ramp and set off to a mixed reception one week after the UCI announced it had closed its anti-doping investigation into Froome.

"We're taking some time back on some of the other GC guys".

He said he was "really happy" with Monday's time trial. We've been close in the past in Tour team time trials. "We had a clear plan and we're happy because we pulled it off".

"A team time trial is always a something special when the whole team makes efforts for the same goal", Van Avermaet said.
