Jose Mourinho and his coaching staff, including Michael Carrick, spent the day at Carrington on Tuesday before the players who have not been involved at the World Cup reported on Wednesday.

Mourinho lamented England's inability to grab a second goal and says Perisic's goal gave Croatia "an overdose of confidence".

The Red Devils were heavily linked with a move to sign the Croatia worldwide throughout the summer transfer window previous year and there has also been fresh speculation linking him with Manchester United in recent months. "Normally you judge wide players on their pace and creativity, but he's physical too - exceptionally physical - and in the air he's fantastic".

"So the way he wins that ball in the air [for Mandzukic's winning goal] and puts the ball into that space is only possible if you are very, very physical and dominant over defenders".

"So he was wonderful by going there and winning that ball in the air".

Perisic has scored twice and set up one goal in six appearances at the World Cup in Russian Federation so far, and is expected to play against France in the final on Sunday.

Mourinho was ultimately unable to sign Perisic in 2017 after Inter refused to budge from their initial €50-million asking price, but he remains a big fan of the forward and praised his performance against England while appearing as an analyst on Russia Today.

"It's a great achievement for a country where the league is a minor league and the majority of the players don't play in Croatia but overseas", he said.

Jose Mourinho has around £90m left to spend in the transfer window after acquiring Lee Grant, Fred and Diogo Dalot for around £70m.
