This month's 'blood moon' eclipse to be the longest of the century

The longest lunar eclipse of the century will tint the moon a deep red July 27 in both Central Asia and Eastern Africa. The totality, or when the earth's shadow covers the moon and creates complete darkness, will last one hour and 43 minutes. During the eclipse, the moon will enter the shadow of the earth for about four hours, and the event will be seen clearly across at least three continents, officials said. Though concealed by the sun, the moon is still flecked with a few stray particles of light filtered through Earth's atmosphere.

A total solar eclipse occurs on August 21, 2017, at Mary's River Covered Bridge, in Chester, IL, USA.

The blood moon is also supposed to herald the end of times (boo!), according to some doomsday prophets.

The reason this lunar eclipse will be a particularly long one is because the moon will be passing nearly directly through the central part of Earth's shadow, while the moon is at a particularly distant point from Earth in its monthly orbit. Earth, on the other hand, is closer to the sun, so it orbits faster than the Red Planet does.

Because solar eclipses are seen by a much smaller section of the population, and the view of the blocked sun is so breathtaking, they create a lot of fanfare. The total lunar eclipse will display a "blood moon" phenomena in all its glory, and you can read about the whys, where and when of what that is in this article from the Inquisitr. "A Blue Moon is the second full moon during a calendar month", he said.

But on July 27 late night, the Full Moon would be near its apogee, the farthest point from the Earth in its orbit around the Earth, and it would be the smallest full moon of the year.

The eclipse will also be partially visible for 3 hours and 55 minutes.

EarthSky notes that the longest possible lunar eclipse is 1 hour and 47 minutes. People will see a special approach to the Red Planet - Mars, in the month of July, which will be the climax of its approach on the same day eclipse.

However, the phenomenon is not safe to view with naked eyes.

Protective eyewear was recommended during the solar eclipse to protect people's eyes from the bright light of the sun.

The next time a lunar eclipse is visible in North America is January 21, 2019.

But every two years or so, the two planets appear to form a straight line with the sun with the Earth in the middle - the celestial event dubbed opposition. The best time to watch will be at 9:20 when the maximum eclipse will occur and the moon will come out from the shadow of the earth at around 11:20.
