The party's primary industries spokesman Mark Patterson called the promotion of the "Impossible burger", which contains a plant-based meat substitute on some worldwide flights a "slap in the face" for New Zealand's red meat sector.

Speaking of their collaboration with Impossible Foods, Air New Zealand's Inflight Customer Experience Manager Niki Chave said, "We're confident vegetarians, flexitarians and dedicated meat lovers alike will enjoy the delicious taste of the Impossible Burger, but for those who want to stay with the tried and true it will sit alongside our regular selection of menu items prepared by our talented culinary team and consultant chefs".

Air New Zealand has partnered with American start-up company, Impossible Foods, to offer guests a beef-like cruelty free burger made entirely from plants.

This is also the first time the burger has been available in New Zealand.

New Zealand First primary industries spokesperson Mark Patterson issued a press release warning that the veggie burger could pose "an existential threat to New Zealand's second biggest export earner" and was a "slap in the face" for the NZ$9bn red meat sector.

"There has been widespread concern in the regions at the loss of services from provincial airports and now we have Air New Zealand actively promoting synthetic proteins which have a genetic modification component to them".

"How are we meant to sell New Zealand to the world if we fail to show off the things that make us great - like the premium New Zealand grass-fed beef patty".

The former Minister for Primary Industries has tweeted this country produces the most delicious steaks and lamb on the planet. Recently, A&W Canada announced plans to put Beyond Meat on its menu across all 925 locations in the country, starting July 9.

He's not suggesting the airline should replace the vegetarian option with meat.

'Disappointing to see Air NZ promoting a GE substitute meat burger on its flights to the USA, ' Mr Guy wrote.

He says the national carrier should be pushing our premium products and helping sell New Zealand to the world.

"Like Impossible Foods, we are committed to offering our customers a fresh and innovative approach to cuisine".

The Impossible Burger is available in almost 2,500 restaurants throughout the United States.

Reviews on Treehugger.com said the burger smelt like liver and you "could definitely tell it wasn't real meat", while Revelist discovered the $13 lunch had "a hint of seaweed flavor", and a "faintly wheat-y aftertaste".
