The doctors announced the harm of wearing a tie

  • The findings endorse the increasingly popular tech-bro uniform championed by mark Zuckerberg doing away with ties in favour of stretchy attire

According to a paper published last week in the journal Neuroradiology and cited by medical website Aunt Minnie, the impact of wearing neckties on people's health had largely been unknown prior to the 21st century.

In 2003 a study suggested intraocular pressure could rise with the wearing of tight ties, worsening glaucoma, a leading cause of blindness.

"The examination resulted in a statistically significant decrease of cerebral blood flow after tightening the necktie (p 0.001) while the venous flow did not show any significant changes", the researchers wrote in their study.

30 men were recruited, 15 wearing a neck tie and 15 with an open collar shirt. The group wearing neckties were scanned three times - once when they were wearing the neck tie loosely around their necks with an open collar, second time when they were wearing the ties tight to a slight discomfort with buttoned collar and third time when the ties and the collars are loosened again. This causes reduced blood flow to the brain. The other group underwent three MRI scans but without a tie and an open collar.

The next time one of your friends or acquaintances pulls a Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother and tells you to "suit up", you might want to forgo the necktie, as a new study suggests that wearing a tie reduces blood circulation to the brain, potentially preventing the brain from processing information as smoothly as it should.

After scanning the brains of the participants, the researchers found that the ties squeezed the veins where the blood passes through to reach the brain, cutting off circulation by 7.5 percent.

A smooth and steady flow of blood to the brain is crucial for all our neurons and cells to continue ticking along, transmitting messages and making it possible to respond instantly to an issue, conundrum or threat. In the experiment involved 30 men. Study leader Robin Lüddecke and colleagues write that it is too early to draw definitive conclusions from this study.
