Some Starbucks drinks, like cold brew with cold foam, are already served in cups with strawless lids. It's a plastic strawless lid that will come to replace single-use plastic straws that now inundate its coffee shops.

Customers who prefer or need a straw can request one, which will be made of alternative materials, the release said.

Starbucks is saying goodbye to its signature green plastic straws.

In a statement, CEO Kevin Johnson called the move away from plastic straws a "significant milestone" in the company's sustainability efforts. And it's a part of Starbucks' $10 million investment in creating recyclable and compostable cups around the world.

"With 8 million metric tons of plastic entering the ocean every year, we can not afford to let industry sit on the sidelines, and we are grateful for Starbucks leadership in this space", Nicholas Mallos, director of Ocean Conservancys Trash Free Seas program, said in the release.

Starbucks, citing the environment threat to oceans, will ban plastic straws from all of its stores globally in less than two years.

The strawless lid is available in more than 8,000 stores in the USA and Canada for drinks such as nitro cold brew and cold foam cold brew coffee.

Last month, McDonald's (MCD) said that it would start switching to paper straws in the United Kingdom and Ireland in September.

Other municipalities mulling over the same kind of measure include Portland and New York City; California is considering a statewide ban.

"By nature, the straw isn't recyclable and the lid is, so we feel this decision is more sustainable and more socially responsible", said Chris Milne, director of packaging sourcing for Starbucks.
