Several days previously, Pyongyang had slated the USA for seeking unilateral and forced denuclearization from North Korea.

US President Donald Trump said today that he has a "little gift" for North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, but wouldn't reveal what it is.

However, officials say it could be months before excavations can begin and years until the remains are identified.

"I extend my conviction that the epochal progress in promoting the DPRK-US relations will bring our next meeting forward", Kim concludes, using the abbreviation for the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the North's official name.

Officials from the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency traveled to the United Nations -controlled area in the heavily fortified border for the meeting but the North Koreans never showed up, according to official sources.

Trump's remarks, which he made in a brief exchange with reporters before departing on a week-long trip to Europe, follow a report last week by a South Korean newspaper that Trump had asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to deliver a copy of the CD to Kim during a trip to Pyongyang last week.

Pyongyang has reportedly asked the United Nations Command Armistice Commission to upgrade the talks to a higher level to include a US general, South Korea's foreign ministry said.

American officials have been on standby for weeks and have sent wooden coffins and flags to Panmunjom in preparation for a handover. "It is likely that military generals from the US and North Korea will take part in the meeting".

The transfer of remains between North Korea and the United States has not taken place since 2005.

It would be the first such repatriation in more than a decade after a joint search effort was halted amid rising tensions over the North's nuclear weapons program.

In the letter dated July 6, Kim thanked Trump for his "energetic and extraordinary efforts" to improve the once hostile relations between the two countries.

According to estimates from the Pentagon, 7,700 US troops are still unaccounted for from the Korean War. 5,300 of that number are believed to have been killed north of the 38th parallel, which marks the border between the two Koreas. Trump tweeted the signed letter, saying it was a "very nice note" and that "great progress was being made". He also told supporters in Nevada that North Korea had already handed over 200 sets of remains.
