Sound of Electromagnetic Energy Moving Between Saturn, Enceladus

  • Space music: NASA listens in on Enceladus

In fact, it sounds exactly like what one would think "space sound transmissions" would sound like.

Interestingly, it is through studies like these that we learned that the auroras on Saturn send off radio waves that are extremely similar to the frequency that we use here on Earth for AM radio stations.

Scientists have recorded plasma waves from the probe Cassini mission Grand Finale, which are formed from the interaction between Saturn and its satellite Enceladus. Researchers say the lines act like an electrical circuit, causing energy to flow back and forth between the planet and its moon.

According to Science Alert, by utilizing the Radio Plasma Wave Science tool (RPWS), researchers have been able to hear plasma waves traveling in between the two bodies, proving that these waves are able to easily navigate the magnetic field lines between Enceladus and Saturn.

Enceladus is the most remarkable satellite of Saturn among the other 62 and is also touted to be one of the most probable sites of extraterrestrial life. The space agency recently revealed that there are complex organic molecules in Enceladus' inner water ocean world. At the end of the day, Cassini recognized electromagnetic waves in the sound recurrence extend - and on the ground, we can open up and play those signs through a speaker. Scientists have converted these signals into audio and accelerated it with 16 minutes to 28.5 seconds.

It is common knowledge that sound can not travel through a vacuum, so how did NASA get a sound file?

'Now we find that Saturn responds by launching signals in the form of plasma waves, through the circuit of magnetic field lines connecting it to Enceladus hundreds of thousands of miles away'.

Much like air or water, plasma (the fourth state of matter) generates waves to carry energy.

Ali Sulaiman, a planetary scientist at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, and a member of the RPWS team said, "Enceladus is this little generator going around Saturn, and we know it is a continuous source of energy". These particular intense plasma waves were detected during Cassini's one of the closest encounters to Saturn and picked up by spacecraft's Radio Plasma Wave Science (RPWS) instrument.

The study was first published by the American Geophysical Union.
