Serena Williams reaches 10th Wimbledon final with straight sets win

  • Ostapenko has spent less time on court en route to the semi-finals

Serena Williams defeated Julia Goerges in straight sets to reach her 10th Wimbledon final and 30th Grand Slam final overall. Wimbledon seemingly disagrees with where the WTA think Williams is at right now.

Let others shrug at this latest accomplishment, as if all it signified were merely another chance at another in a long line of trophies. This was one of a clutch of strangely lacklustre all-Williams finals that played a role in the public's apathy.

Rightly so. For it was only about 10 months ago she was having a baby and then dealing with a serious health scare that followed.

Kerber is going to need every bit of her powerful return game and relentless hitting to force Williams to make mistakes.

Williams played a total of seven matches in 2018 before arriving at the All England Club, and she'll be playing her seventh match in the last two weeks when she meets 11th-seeded Angelique Kerber of Germany in the Wimbledon final on Saturday.

She was, instead, going to employ spectacular defense and solid, steady play, while letting her opponent, Jelena Ostapenko, be the one to determine the outcomes of almost every point. I've said it all week, this is only my fourth tournament back.

"This was not inevitable for me", Williams said after the match, which took 70 minutes to complete.

If you watched her HBO docu-series, you know the full story really well by now. She lost in the quarterfinals to 12th-seeded Jelena Ostapenko.

Kerber, who also won the Australian Open in 2016, is bidding to become the first German woman to win Wimbledon since Graf in 1996.

Once criticised by some for making the women's game predictable with her dominance, Williams has won people over by sharing her vulnerabilities and now stands close to a fairytale ending.

The 36-year-old American, who experienced life-threatening complications after giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr last September, faces Angelique Kerber in the Ladies' final on Saturday. I had to have multiple surgeries and nearly didn't make it to be honest. Win or lose, she was defying odds and outperforming even the most optimistic predictions for her first year back on tour. I want to get as many as I can.

"I think there are few kinds of tennis players".

"It's no secret I had a super tough delivery. There was a time I could barely walk to my mailbox", said Williams.

Williams took a 19-match Wimbledon winning streak into the day. Now for sure she had a lot of big confidence, especially after the matches she won here already.

Williams' match against Goerges was even until 2-all, 30-all. That first game consisted of eight points: Three were unforced errors by Ostapenko, including a double-fault to begin the proceedings; the other five were winners by her, including a 100 miles per hour ace to close the hold.

But she has not had it easy. Or, more to the point on this afternoon, how such a stinging serve and groundstrokes didn't help her avoid first-round exits each of the past five years at Wimbledon.

Tennis fans have been desperate to see the new Duchess of Sussex at Wimbledon - and now she's set to make her royal debut at SW19 on a double date with Kate.
