Senator Graham Slams Democratic Dissent of Kavanaugh

  • US President Donald Trump congratulates his Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh

Kavenaugh is meeting with senators to ask for their support.

Opposition to President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee took a odd turn when some chose to attack him for his first name, Brett. A simple majority is required.

Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky called Kavanagh "one of the most thoughtful jurists" in the country but warned of an onslaught of "fear mongering" from liberal groups trying to derail the nomination.

"Obviously the more there is, the more opportunities there are to highlight why he's problematic", one senior Democratic aide said, adding that given it's a lifetime appointment, Democrats should have access to everything that exists. Colbert cited the many conservative legal battles that Kavanaugh has been a part of or weighed in on.

As a member of Ken Starr's staff, Kavanaugh pushed for an aggressive prosecution of President Clinton. It was ruled a suicide, but some people dispute this.

Alan Schroeder, journalism professor at Northeastern University in Boston, said that "one of the peculiarities of the Trump presidency is that everything this White House touches gets turned into a spectacle, intentionally or not".

In 2016, McConnell similarly thought an election should play out first before a vote.

How will those Senate Democrats vote against a Supreme Court nominee who is popular with voters?

That said, it is a decision that is entirely up to Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, and the Iowa Republican made clear to CNN's Manu Raju on Tuesday that he needs time to get his arms around the scale of the documents and review process before he locks in a timeline.

However, Brewer said she does not think McCain will make it back to the Senate in order to vote on the Kavanaugh confirmation.

In a press conference, Democratic senators took aim at Kavanaugh and criticized his rulings on hot-button issues like reproductive rights. Abortion became legal in 1973 in a famous case known as Roe versus Wade.

"He has to answer questions", Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) told reporters.

"I think that the court is going to incrementally move to the right - I don't think it's going to be huge and dramatic", he said.

Other Democrats are anxious about Kavanaugh's written opinion that a President should not face legal action for a crime while in office. Special counsel Robert Mueller, of course, is now investigating potential collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign during the 2016 election. "Whoever President Trump put up they were opposed to".

The perch of a Supreme Court seat can provide additional sources of income.

At the announcement, Kavanaugh stood with his wife and two daughters and said he was "humbled" by the nomination. Justice Samuel Alito, an appellate judge with a law degree from Yale, was Bush's next choice.

Democrats have had an advantage in enthusiasm over the past year, but a high court fight could offset that advantage, producing larger Republican Senate gains in November and possibly minimizing Democratic gains in the House.

Democrats blew their chance to shape the make up of the Supreme Court when they blew the 2016 presidential election. The next oldest Republican-appointed justice on the court is Thomas, who at 70 could serve for another decade or more. Those included a number of disputed cases, including ones supporting same-sex marriage and a woman's right to an abortion.

The Supreme Court sits at the top of the judicial branch of government. The two other branches are represented by the presidency and Congress.

If confirmed to the Supreme Court, he'll be paid $255,300 as an associate justice.

So will Sen. Cory Booker, a New Jersey Democrat who's also on the committee and is seen as a 2020 hopeful.
