  • Experimental blood test could detect melanoma skin cancer early, study finds

Melanoma is the deadliest and most common type of skin cancer caused mainly through exposure to UV light and sunlight.

Researchers say if further trials are successful, the test could be distributed internationally in the next five years. While the initial blood test was trialled on 209 people, the next step is to complete a clinical trial on 1,000 participants at the time they have a biopsy for a suspicious lesion.

In the test, which was attended by about 200 people, half of whom had cancer, the analysis successfully diagnosed in 81.5% of cases.

"So a blood test would help in that identification particularly at early stage melanoma, which is what is the most concerning and would be most beneficial for everybody if it was identified early.".

Australian scientists on Wednesday said they have developed a new blood test to detect melanoma cancer in its early stages, in a move that could save millions of lives and significantly reduce costs to the healthcare system. She added that survival rates are reduced to less than 50% if the cancer spreads.

It works by detecting auto-antibodies which our body produces when melanoma first develops.

In a new study, scientists were able to identify people who had the aggressive form of skin cancer with nearly 80 percent accuracy.

The world's first melanoma blood test has a detection rate of 79%.

Researchers revealed that the goal of this new test, which is billed as the first of its kind in the world, is to make spotting the skin cancer easier so doctors can catch it before it turns into a fatal diagnosis.

They also said that the blood test could provide more accurate results than the human eye and save many lives.

"Patients who have their melanoma detected in its early stage have a five-year survival rate between 90 and 99 percent", said Zaenker in a statement.

"My melanoma could have been detected very early and what we know about the earlier the detection, the better the outcome".

"While clinicians do a fantastic job with the tools available, relying on biopsies alone can be problematic as three out of four come back negative for melanoma", she said. It often starts with a change in a mole or a new growth on skin. "No other type of biomarker appears to be capable of detecting the cancer in blood at these early stages".
