  • Scarlett Johansson to play mob-connected massage parlour owner in Rub & Tug

Scarlett Johansson's upcoming movie already has fans talking. and not in a good way.

Scarlett Johansson is under fire again.

A representative for Scarlett reportedly gave Bustle comment from the actress herself, referencing other actors who have played trans roles.

Rub & Tug tells the story of a transgender man, Dante "Tex" Gill, who owned a massage parlor in Pittsburgh's underground sex industry in the 1970s, according to Vice News.

"Tell them that they can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto, and Felicity Huffman's reps for comment".

Known for playing the character Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, Scarlett Johansson voiced Kaa and Ash in 2016's "The Jungle Book" and "Sing" respectively, Nutmeg in 2018's "Isle of Dogs" and played the lead character in 2014 action movie "Lucy". So why would she take work away from a trans actor? As a trans person myself (female to male) I have no problem with it. Leave her be, guys, it's just a film role.

After news broke that the actress is slated to play a transgender character in the film "Rub & Tug", critics immediately flocked to Twitter to express their disapproval of Johannson's new role. In 2017, Sanders directed Johansson in Ghost in the Shell, an adaptation of the Japanese manga by the same name, which sparked accusations of whitewashing after Johansson, a white woman, played Motoko Kusanagi, a Japanese character.

Huffman was Oscar-nominated for playing a transgender woman in 2005's Transamerica and Leto won a supporting actor Oscar for playing another transgender woman in 2013's Dallas Buyers Club.

And some people see this as a continuation of the 33-year-old taking roles that she shouldn't.

Now, Johansson's casting as a character with a different gender identity in Rub & Tug has provoked fresh ire.

Gill, who was born Lois Jean Gill but lived her life as a man and married her long-term partner Cynthia Bruno, died in 2003.
