'Scapegoat' Ozil should quit German team: father

Midfielder Mesut Ozil has been urged by his father to retire from global football after being used as a scapegoat for Germany's misfortunes at the World Cup.

The still-reigning world champions went out in the group stage in Russian Federation after a string of lackluster performances for their earliest tournament exit in 80 years.

On Thursday, Germany's team boss Oliver Bierhoff sparked a new round of outcry over a statement suggesting Ozil, who has Turkish roots, should have been dropped after his failure to publicly clear up the Erdogan meeting.

"If I were in his place, I would say: 'Thank you, but that's enough, '" the 50-year-old told Bild am Sonntag.

The fact that Mesut and Ilkay took the pictures (with Turkey President Erdogan) did not bother the team so much, but the debate went on and, in retrospect, I would have tried to deal with this issue more decisively.

Both players are of Turkish descent, and were pictured presenting Erdogan with shirts from their respective club teams, Arsenal and Manchester City.

Whilst German FA president Reinhard Grindel has called for Ozil to explain himself over the photo. Grindel said the player's service to the national team should allow him some leeway from fans.

The fallout from Germany's disastrous World Cup campaign continues - and it could spell the end of Mesut Ozil's worldwide career. It has always been: "if we win, we win together", he continued. "I can understand if he feels insulted", said the midfielder's father. His ineffective performances in the first two group matches of Germany saw him benched in the final group game, which eventually turned out to be their last match in the ongoing world cup. He said the team management take that feeling of alienation "very seriously".

He said the treatment was "so unfair", adding that, "he needs to decide for himself". In Mesut's place, I would step down.
