  • Passengers board a Ryanair Holdings flight at Dublin Airport in Ireland

Dozens of Ryanair passengers have been discharged from hospital after being treated for nausea following an unscheduled landing in Germany.

The aircraft, which lost cabin pressure about 80 minutes into the flight, descended some 20,000 feet over a seven-minute period, according to data from FlightRadar24.com.

Oxygen masks fell from the ceiling and passengers reported feeling intense pain in their ears until the plane levelled off and landed at Frankfurt-Hahn Airport.

The flight had to make an emergency landing in Frankfurt in Germany due to "inflight depressurisation".

In a statement quoted by DPA, the low-priced Irish carrier said the aircraft had suffered a sudden loss of cabin pressure, prompting the deployment of oxygen masks with the plane going into a controlled descent to Frankfurt-Hahn airport. "So we were all awake upwards of 36 hours of the entire ordeal - just completely exhausted, shattered and I would just say shocked with the treatment that we received from Ryanair".

"They really displayed a shocking lack of empathy for their customers, nearly bordering on inhumane", he was quoted as saying.

Earlier this week a co-pilot smoking an e-cigarette on an Air China flight caused the plane to start a rapid emergency descent, bringing the plane 6,500m lower, investigators said.

Passengers were able to board a different flight to Zadar the yesterday morning.

A Ryanair spokesman said: "This flight from Dublin to Zadar diverted to Frankfurt Hahn due to an inflight depressurisation".

Ryanair said it would pay for hotels for the affected passengers but added that there was a "shortage of available accommodation".

"Customers boarded a replacement aircraft which departed to Zadar the following morning and Ryanair sincerely apologised for any inconvenience".

Another passenger, Ruth Cosgrove, tweeted: "Been on a lot of flights in my time but never experienced emergency landing with oxygen masks and the works on flight to our holiday destination in Croatia".
