The complex, high-risk mission for global and Thai divers to guide the boys and coach through the cave's flooded and tight passageways had riveted people worldwide. "But we used the sadness to unite us", he said.

Dripping water, birthday snacks and meditation all helped keep the team alive until divers eventually reached them.

Parents of the first eight boys who were rescued from the depths of the cave were allowed to visit them at hospital, but strictly cautioned to stand two metres away from their children. "We were extremely fortunate that the outcome was the way it was".

"What was really important was the coach and the boys all came together and discussed staying strong, having the will to live, having the will to survive", Anderson said.

That gutsy determination was on display Wednesday in a video taken from the hospital isolation ward.

The youngest, 11, appeared asleep under a crisp white sheet.

Thai soldiers relay electric cable deep into the Tham Luang cave at the Khun Nam Nang Non Forest Park in Chiang Rai on June 26, 2018 during a rescue operation for a missing children's football team and their coach.

The details of the complex operation are among the first to emerge from a rescue effort to save 12 boys and their football coach that has been shrouded in secrecy since it began on Sunday and ended successfully three days later. They would then need to recuperate at home for 30 days, he said. Thongchai said one member of the final group of four boys and the coach who arrived at the hospital Tuesday evening had a slight lung infection.

Australian media said he put his own life at risk to venture four kilometres into the flooded cave to medically assess the 12 boys and their coach. "I'm happy that the boys are out too", said Khamluh Guntawong, the grandfather of team coach Ekkapol Chantawong. They spent nine days in darkness until two British divers found them, before their drawn-out rescue that captivated global attention.

"We're here really looking at this as a movie that could inspire millions of people across the globe", Scott added. Former Thai Navy SEAL Saman Gunan died last Friday while putting extra air tanks along the escape path.

Speaking at a press conference a day after the last members of the group were extracted, Mr Narongsak - the former governor of Chiang Rai province - said rescuers had to be confident before they attempted the daring rescue through narrow tunnels and murky waters.

Harris' colleagues and fellow rescuers lauded his commitment to the mission and how vital his expertise was in bringing the boys out to safety.

Described in a South Australia Ambulance Service statement as a "quiet and kind man" who "didn't think twice about offering his support on this mission", Harris was lauded for his work throughout the rescue effort.

Each of the boys, with no diving experience, was guided out by divers though rocky, muddy and water-filled passages that in places were just a crawl space.
