Donald Trump was called "treasonous" and "imbecilic" after he cozied up to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday in a meeting that a growing number of Republicans have criticized loudly.

A Republican state representative from Dallas unequivocally called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump in a blistering editorial published Wednesday morning.

"The American people should be very anxious about the commitment of this president and his Republican allies in Congress to securing our elections", Rep. David N. Cicilline (D-R.I.) said on the House floor on Wednesday. He said states still have money left from this year's $380 million appropriation - and that lawmakers have not been made aware of any outstanding needs as the November midterm elections approach.

Sessions continued saying that there is already enough funding and that there's no additional evidence from special counsel Robert Mueller's probe to suggest they need to up security.

Trump, grappling with a torrent of criticism over his performance at a Helsinki summit with Putin, said he misspoke at their joint news conference and meant to say he saw no reason why it was not Russian Federation that interfered in the 2016 US election. When asked Wednesday if Russian Federation is still targeting the United States and its midterm elections, Trump responded "no", but White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders later said Trump was saying "no" to answering more questions. One by one, Republicans denied their requests.

"There is no crisis. They will be back, and we are not ready", said Rep. Mike Quigley, D-Ill.

Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, said Republicans' refusal to spend more money on election security "represents nothing less than unilateral disarmament" against Russia, citing the USA intelligence community's finding that Russia intervened in the 2016 election and charges brought by the Justice Department against Russian officials for hacking Democratic groups.

Democrats said states would ask for more money if Congress made more available and that the only reason they haven't spent it all is because they only just received it in some cases.

Press secretary Sarah Sanders released a statement Wednesday night that praised the $5 billion allocated for border wall construction included in a bill introduced earlier Wednesday by the House Appropriations Committee.
