Wildlife rangers in northern Australia captured a massive 600 kilogram (1,300 pound) crocodile after first spotting it almost a decade ago.

The 1,300-pound predator was caught about 185 miles from the ocean and about 19 miles downstream from Katherine Gorge, a major tourist attraction outside the town of Katherine, the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife officials said.

The 4.7m beast was found in a trap downstream from the northern outback town of Katherine after first being spotted in 2010. However when saltwater crocodiles are found near the gorge, they are captured.

"It's a bit of a thrill, but you've also got to admire the size of the animal and how old it is", Burke said.

"You've got to have a bit of respect for it".

Ranger Chris Heydon told the Katherine Times that once in the trap, the giant reptiles are sedated, "so there is no chance of us getting chomped".

The post included a photo showing the crocodile tied down on a trailer with duct tape around its jaw.

Weighing up to 600 kg (1,322 lb), the 60-year old crocodile is the biggest ever removed from the Katherine River in the remote Northern Territory.

The croc has been taken to a crocodile farm in the Katherine region.

So far this year, 187 of them have been captured in the Top End - the northernmost part of the Northern Territory, according to the Northern Territory Parks and Wildlife website, which advises visitors to be "crocwise". Though it's record-breaking for the area, elsewhere in the wild, saltwater crocodiles can be much larger.

Wildlife rangers in the North Territory captured a mammoth crocodile Monday.

It was moved to live out its days at a crocodile farm.
