A sprightly Nadal went on the front foot to turn the tide in the fourth, Del Potro twice hitting the deck as he was broken to love to trail 3-2 and while he saved two set points behind his powerful serve, the 11-time French Open champion was jumping for joy after a searing backhand victor made sure the match would go all the way.

"I think I will be in good condition".

None of his opening four opponents were ranked inside the world top 50, meaning he faced a huge jump in class against world number four Juan Martin del Potro in Wednesday's semi-final. "In some ways he deserves to go through too".

"In the last set there was a little of everything, great points, great rallies, he was hitting insane with his forehands". I just tried to fight for every point. "It's a day to be happy".

Even then he was left flat on his stomach as his racket went flying out of his hand. The set stayed on serve until Del Potro secured the first break point for a 4-3 lead. It was that kind of match.

"I'm sorry for him, of course", said Nadal. The only negative thing is I played nearly five hours, and I had the chance maybe to play less winning that second set.

The fourth-round match resumed on Tuesday afternoon after bad light had stopped play on Monday with the Argentinian leading by two sets to one.

It was not as if Nadal was playing badly.

But after 22 games, Anderson finally got the break before serving out for the match to cause the shock of the tournament.

It was as if that out-of-the-blue news threw the Spaniard off his stride and he fluffed his lines to drop his serve.

World number one Nadal saw off Del Potro 7-5, 6-7 (7/9), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 after four hours and 48 minutes on Centre Court to reach his sixth Wimbledon semi-final and 28th at the majors. Del Potro made him pay as he pounced on his first chance to raise the prospect of another upset on day nine.

Goerges had to do it the hard way after coming from a set down against the Dutch No.20 seed to win 3-6 7-5 6-1 and set up a showdown with the formidable Serena Williams.

Two-time champion Rafael Nadal outlasted Juan Martin del Porto in a match that lasted almost five hours in the Wimbledon quarterfinals Wednesday in London.

It is the first time since he reached the Australian Open and French Open quarterfinals in 2012 that del Potro has qualified for the last eight at consecutive Grand Slams.
