The steamy conditions that have prevailed in Central and Eastern Canada for several days have contributed to 33 deaths in Quebec, health officials said Thursday.

Eighteen of the deaths occurred in Montreal, where the temperature Thursday was expected to climb to 113 degrees Fahrenheit with humidity. "The elderly, people with chronic diseases and people with mental health problems are more at risk".

None of the victims had air conditioning, and Kaiser said a lot of them died inside of their homes.

"Montreal is enormous heat island", he said, referring to an environmental phenomenon caused by a lack of vegetation and an abundance of concrete.

As well, most had health issues aggravated by the poor air quality that is a byproduct of the excessively high heat and humidity, said Regional Health Authority Dr. Mylene Drouin.

A government heat warning is in place for the region, but meteorologists are forecasting a drop in temperatures at the end of the week.

The province of Quebec was hit with highs of 86 F plus temperatures (30 C) beginning June 29 with accompanying humidex levels of between 104 F - 113 F (40 C -45 C).

Due to a difference in reporting systems, Canadian officials do not know if other provinces suffered deaths in relation to the heat wave.

The neighbouring province of Ontario was also under heat warnings over the last few days and may too have seen a rise in heat-related fatalities.
