Planemakers plot course through trade, Brexit worries to air show deals

Here are some of the top orders from Day 1 of the event.

It followed that up with a US$3.5 billion deal for 30 of its hot-selling single-aisle 30 737 MAX 8 aircraft with USA aircraft leasing firm Jackson Square Aviation, while Qatar Airways finalised an order for five 777 freighters. The order is worth $6 billion at list prices. Airbus and Boeing are undergoing an unprecedented order boom fuelled for single-aisle jets driven by fuel-saving planes and growth in air travel, especially Asia.

Heading into the show, Airbus was closing in on orders totaling US$29 billion, based on list prices, from Taiwanese startup StarLux Airlines (星宇航空) and Malaysia's AirAsia Group Bhd.

Goshawk Aviation and GOL also signed orders of the 737 Max, with 20 and 45 being ordered respectively.

"Let me make one thing clear", Tinseth said.

With the industry giants moving onto its turf, Japan's big hope for the regional jet market, the Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ), was dealt a setback on Tuesday when it had to cancel a demo flight after the jet was hit by a truck. Two of the planes were eventually sold to the USA government at bargain prices and are destined to become the new Air Force One fleet in 2024.

'But this year fears about the future after Brexit are looming, and for many people will dominate gossip in the plush chalets and meeting rooms.

ADS, the powerful industry body which also represents companies in Gloucestershire including the mighty Staverton-based Safran, the landing gear specialists, welcomed the statement - with a caveat.

Sensitive UK choices over worldwide partnerships are also expected to loom large in the defence side of the show. China needs a positive contribution from the aerospace industry to help fulfil its growth ambitions, while Boeing and its suppliers help generate a huge trade surplus as well as manufacturing jobs in the US.

The result should be a fierce contest for sales in the 100-150-seat sector even before Boeing closes its Embraer deal.

"A new airline, Moxy, is expected to confirm a large order for the rebranded Airbus A220, the former Bombardier CSeries". But could there be a hitch?

Higher oil prices and interest rates are seen as a warning sign that the long-running aviation boom may be peaking, while trade tension between the USA and China and concern about disruption to supply chains from the UK's departure from the European Union also worrying the industry.

Planemakers racked up more than US$20 billion of deals on the opening day of the Farnborough Airshow on Monday, suggesting demand for new passenger jets remains in rude health despite worries over trade tensions and Brexit.

Billions of dollars are at stake as the world's largest plane makers, Boeing and Airbus, duel over orders this week at the Farnborough Air Show, which opens outside London on Monday and is the biggest event of its kind this year.

Boeing noted that "a portion of the order was previously unidentified on Boeing's Orders & Deliveries website". "It has delivered fewer planes than it did by this time last year, despite promising 80 more this year".
