A police officer seen in a video "doing nothing", while a woman was being harassed by a drunk man for wearing a Puerto Rico flag shirt, has resigned.

The Facebook Live video, filmed by Mia Irizarry, shows her being continually abused by a man later identified as 62-year-old Timothy G. Trybus at a picnic area in Cook County, Illinois.

As for Trybus, he was released on bond and has a court appearance scheduled on August 1.

"That officer did absolutely nothing - he did absolutely zero", Irizarry said in the video, which was streamed from her Facebook profile on June 14, but gained a wider audience this week. "Are you a United States citizen?"

She says: "Officer, I'm renting, I paid for a permit for this area". "I told him I felt uncomfortable multiple times and he didn't do anything".

The video elicited strong reactions and there have been calls for the officer in the video be fired.

Several different versions of the video have appeared across social media, but they all show a man, later identified by authorities as Trybus, berating a woman.

A representative of Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle's office declined comment about the charges.

In the footage, a man can be seen approaching Irizarry saying: "You should not be wearing that in the United States of America".

The Cook County Forest Preserve officer can be seen in the video standing in the background, not moving closer as Trybus continued to come up to Irizzary. More officers eventually arrived and arrested the man.

A much longer video - around 36 minutes - shows Connor taking a statement from the woman and her brother, but after additional officers arrive at the scene.

In a statement announcing Connor's resignation, officials with the Forest Preserve District of Cook County said that they planned to further address "aspects of this incident" and that they would not provide additional details until Thursday.

Officer Patrick Connor had been placed on desk duty pending an investigation into the matter, and was scheduled to attend a hearing with his bosses on Thursday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

"OK, OK", Ms Irizarry says, trying to placate him.

Quick aside and history lesson: Puerto Ricans are indeed USA citizens.

Ricardo Rossello, the governor of Puerto Rico, wants the officer fired.

On Twitter, he said: "We can not allow those who do not understand America's greatness to terrorize people due to their background".
