  • Nurse Allegedly Killed Up To 20 Patients She Wanted Control Over Deaths

Since her arrest, Ms Kuboki has admitted to police that she killed the two men as well as "about 20 other patients", the Asahi Shimbun newspaper reported.

The 31-year-old, who worked at Oguchi Hospital in Yokohama, was busted Saturday on suspicion of murdering 88-year-old Sozo Nishikawa in September 2016.

In December a year ago, while the investigation into the mysterious deaths at the hospital was was ongoing, Kuboki told Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun, "I've worked hard to help patients die in peace, so I was shocked by the incidents".

Police launched their probe after another nurse spotted bubbles inside the IV drip bag of 88-year-old patient Nobuo Yamaki after he died in September 2016. "It was troublesome and hard having to explain to their family members".

Police believe the cold-hearted caregiver put cleaning product containing benzalkonium chloride into patients' IVs - which left Yamaki and Nishikawa dead within hours.

Security cameras caught a former nurse, under arrest on suspicion of fatally poisoning a patient at a hospital here, walking inside the institution while carrying unnecessary drugs during a night shift after the incident, investigative sources said. A nurse from the day shift broke the sad news to his family.

Antiseptic was then discovered in the bodies of two further patients, an 89-year-old man and a 78-year-old woman who have not been named.

Former colleagues told Asahi Shimbun they had no idea Kuboki could have been behind the string of deaths.

Investigators found tiny punctures in the rubber seals of the bags, indicating that the antiseptic had been injected into them.

A Japanese nurse was accused of tampering with intravenous drip bags at the hospital she worked at.

Another said: "She was the kind of person who was hard to figure out ... but she was considered competent".

When they examined all of the nurses' uniforms, they found the chemicals around a pocket on Kuboki's uniform. Police zeroed in on Kuboki after analyzing hospital worker uniforms, finding that only hers carried traces of the chemical.

Japanese media quoted her as telling police after her arrest that she had administered the disinfectant to "about 20" other patients, adding that she only targeted those who were gravely ill.

About 48 patients at the hospital died in unusual circumstances over a three-month period in 2016, including five in a single day.
