Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in Noida today to inaugurate world's largest smartphone factory. Ltd's mobile phone factory in Noida-the largest in the world.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath has already visited the Samsung plant in Noida ahead of inauguration by Modi and Moon at 5 pm.

Established in 1995, Samsung India laid the foundation stone of Noida plant next year.

In a statement issued then, the company had said: "The expansion of the plant on an additional 35 acres of land adjacent to the current facility will double the production capacity of both mobile phones and refrigerators".

Samsung's new 35-acre facility in Sector 81, Noida, Uttar Pradesh will be one of the biggest in the world. The plant started with the manufacture of televisions way back in 1997, and mobile phone manufacturing unit was added in 2005. To be clear, Samsung has had manufacturing in India for over two decades. Samsung had past year announced a fresh investment of ₹ 4,915 crore to expand the existing plant by another 35 acres. Keep in mind that the 120 million means feature phones as well. The total mobile phone market in India for 2017 was around 288 million, according to IDC data with 164 million shipments of feature phones in total. That's one reason why Apple Inc. has struggled to gain market share in India, with most iPhone models priced beyond $500, according to a Bloomberg Intelligence report earlier this month.

Samsung's reputation was dealt a blow by the bribery conviction of Lee Jae-yong, who was a key figure in the scandal that ousted former South Korean leader Park Geun-hye following massive nationwide protests, and was sentenced to five years in jail last year. Officially the event will start at around 5.30 pm in the evening.

Samsung has two manufacturing plants in India. Samsung's Noida plant also has a Research and Development Centre, and there's is a design centre as well. In total over 70,000 people are employed by the plant in Noida.

Moon, who arrived in New Delhi on Sunday on a four-day visit to India, is expected to meet Lee Jae-yong, the son and heir of Samsung's current chairman Lee Kun-hee, for the first time since he took power in May previous year. Numerous software products designed for Samsung's smartphones in India are developed by these R&D teams.

While announcing the investment past year, the company had said that it would position the Noida plant as a major production hub and create about 5,000 new jobs.
