Nissan says emissions and fuel economy tests were falsified

  • Nissan admits misconduct in emissions testing procedure

Despite the admission that it cheated, Nissan claims that its vehicle-type approval average measurement values guarantee the catalog specifications for exhaust emissions.

Since the discovery in September 2017 of nonconformities in the final vehicle inspection process (kanken) at its plants in Japan, and in line with operational improvement orders received from the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT), Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has been proactively carrying out comprehensive compliance checks of various parts of its operations.

Nissan has said it has found evidence of misconduct relating to exhaust emissions and fuel economy measurements for 19 models sold in Japan.

Japan's second-largest auto maker said it had found that the testing environments for emissions and fuel economy in final vehicle inspections at most of its factories in Japan were not in line with requirements. Based on the falsified results, inspection reports were created and submitted. It has since carried out an internal investigation into these discrepancies, Reuters reports.

"Nissan understands and regrets the concern and inconvenience caused to stakeholders as a result of its [inspection process] issues previous year".

The firm vowed a "full and comprehensive investigation" into its latest fake data scandal.

Currently, it's believed that Nissan's issues are down to error rather than an attempt at improving emissions ratings, but until a full investigation is completed it can not be known how this error took place. The problems were found during voluntary compliance checks following an improper vehicle inspection scandal a year ago.

Nissan has yet to confirm which vehicles have been affected by the falsification practices, and the extent to which their fuel economy and emissions figures were altered.

Nissan said today it would take appropriate action to prevent future occurrence.
