Rescue workers extracted the last group of the "Wild Boars" soccer team from the Tham Luang cave on Tuesday night, ensuring a happy ending to a 17-day ordeal that had gripped the world.

Narongsak Osatanakorn, the official overseeing the rescue operation, said the boys should not be blamed for the near tragedy. "They are children being children, it was an accident", Narongsak said.

The boys were in isolation in the hospital to prevent infections by outsiders. Some sat and made the "peace sign" gesture for the camera.

A team of around 100 heroes worked Sunday through Tuesday to get the 12 boys and their coach out of the cave, where they'd been trapped more than two weeks earlier by rising waters.

Onlookers at the junction in front of Chiangrai Prachanukroh Hospital watch and cheer as ambulances transport the last rescued schoolboys and their coach from a nearby helipad to the hospital.

The Director of Chiang Rai Hospital said that the boys will need to remain hospitalised for seven to 10 days and then another month of home recovery. Doctors were anxious about potential infections the children could have contracted in the cave. Thongchai said one member of the final group of four boys and the coach who arrived at the hospital Tuesday evening had a slight lung infection.

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha asked that the boys be given time to recover.

"The important things will be helping each other, returning to school and getting back into their community", said Boonruang Triruangworawat, director-general of the Thai Heath Ministry's Mental Health Department.

Video has been released showing them in good health and in good spirits, though they will stay in quarantine for a week.

The 12 boys and their coach were trapped after heavy rain in northern Thailand on June 23 but their rescue has now been completed.

Thai army soldiers return from Tham Luang cave on day three of the rescue operation.

Dr Challen has also explored Australia's longest and deepest underwater caves, Cocklebiddy and the Pearse Resurgence, and is one of only a few to dive some of the country's deepest wartime wrecks. Former Thai Navy SEAL Saman Gunan died last Friday while putting extra air tanks along the escape path.

The Navy Seals unit was led by Rear Admiral Arpakorn Yuukongkaew.

"We are not heroes".

Thailand spent yesterday celebrating the successful mission. "For SEALs, this is what we were trained for". The rescued boys had not been identified out of respect for the families whose sons were still trapped, officials had said.

Some of the first boys to be freed have been able to see their parents, he added.

FC Barcelona responded Wednesday it had invited the team to a match at its Camp Nou stadium in April and to take part in a gathering in the Spanish city of more than 2,000 youngsters from the club's football academies around the world.

"Amazing news that all of the Thai kids are out of the cave safely!"
