The service will now be able to measure upload speed and latency, a major upgrade from its ability to only measure download speed before.

The company's speed test tool was introduced more than two years ago, and it's getting the first update today to provide more information. Also, Netflix highlighted that the service had registered over half a billion speed tests, with the number doubling in the last seven months alone. The service has become significant since it measures your connection to Netflix's servers.

"We all want a faster, better internet, yet internet speeds vary greatly and can be affected by other users on your network, or congestion with your internet service provider". And it's more likely to reflect the sort of speeds you'll actually see in the real world compared to things like speedtest.net, which often reports unrealistic or inflated numbers. While upload speed does not necessarily mean much for streaming on Netflix, it is a vital data for those who run speed test.

The upload speed measures the speed of the connection for uploading data from a user's device to the internet.

Netflix says "We're adding these new measurements to FAST.com so that consumers will have a more comprehensive view of their internet connection speed at any given time". The company said it will measure latency on both unloaded and loaded connections. And the loaded latency measurement shows the latency for when your network is dealing with other traffic, possibly from your own computer or other users. The loaded latency measures the round-trip time when data-centric applications are being used on the network.
