Montreal Morgue Is Overcrowded After Surge In Heat-Related Deaths

  • Five more people die of heat in Montreal, bringing city total to 33

Brochu said this is the first time he has seen the morgue so overcrowded in a normal situation; the only other time it has happened was during renovations.

Officials say five more people have died in Montreal as a result of extreme heat and humidity after a week of record-breaking temperatures.

Stefan Overhoff, chief operating officer at Urgences-sante ambulance service, says people who've endured the heat for several days could still be susceptible to health problems. In Montreal, nearly all were over the age of 50.

The neighboring region Ontario is also facing high temperatures but no death is reported yet.

Jean Brochu, the coroner in Montreal, said a large amount of the 128 available spots in the morgue are permanently occupied by unclaimed bodies.

The number climbed from yesterday's 28 reported deaths because more bodies were discovered and physicians determined that the deaths occurred at some point during the heat wave, said David Kaiser of Santé Montréal.

Earlier, Environment Canada forecasted that the temperature will be 35 Degree Celsius but it will feel like 45 Degree Celsius.

Although the temperature was down over the weekend, Kaiser says the message to people in Montreal stays the same.

"We really hope that the next information we have to give out is the last and total number of deaths for this heat wave".

Authorities in Quebec announced the death of 54 people because of a heat wave hitting the eastern part of Canada since the end of the past month.
