Mobile phone warning road signs 'a UK first'

  • The sign will light up if someone uses their phone in a car nearby

Although the signs can not tell whether a driver or passenger is using a handset it is hope they will help remind people of the dangers of using phones while driving.

The road signs work by using a scanner to detect the radio signals emitted when someone in the vehicle is connected to a call, with this data used to illuminate a sign further down the road.

Westcotec, who are based in Dereham, Norfolk, are working with authorities across the world - including those in Argentina, Slovenia and New Zealand - to implement the mobile phone warning technology.

Using your phone while driving in the UK?

The first of three £6,000 electronic signs was yesterday introduced in Norwich, Norfolk.

The county is introducing road signs that use scanners to electronically detect the radio signals transmitted when mobile phones are connected to a call-and then flash a symbol (on a sign further down the road) showing a cellphone with a line through it to the offending driver to remind him or her such behavior is a no-no.

The technology can not yet log number plates or be used to help catch offending drivers, but it is hoped it will act as a deterrent.

Statistics from the devices will be shared with Norfolk Police, the county council said.

"We will be using the information provided by Norfolk County Council's road safety team to help us target drivers in the future but the message is simple - leave your phone alone whilst you're behind the wheel", he said.

"We are delighted to have been able to partner with Westcotec to trial this new technology across Norfolk".

This scheme is a good example of how we can work with local authorities to make using a mobile phone whilst driving as socially unacceptable as drink or drug-driving.

"Whilst this is still not a flawless science, the new generation of sign is significantly more accurate and reliable than the first".

Norfolk roads policing Inspector Jonathan Chapman said the scheme is "welcomed".

In 2016, figures from the Department for Transport showed that drivers using mobile phones were involved in accidents which killed the equivalent of one person every 10 days in 2016.

After an initial presence at Holt Road, the equipment will then spend a month at Cromer Road, Holt; Shipdham Road, Toftwood and Norwich Road, Attleborough.
