The DIY toy store announced in a press release Monday that it would be holding its first ever "Pay Your Age Day" on Thursday, July 12.

"The response to our Pay Your Age Day event at all of our United Kingdom locations has been overwhelming and unprecedented in our 21-year history", a company statement read.

Build-A-Bear closed lines at all its US stores a few hours after the promotion started, citing "crowd and safety concerns". They also said they are making vouchers available online for USA and Canada Build-A-Bear Bonus Club members who log into their account by July 15 at midnight. "We understand some of our Guests are disappointed and we will reach out directly as soon as possible", the company said in a statement.

The promotion promised that shoppers could get any furry friend for the price of your age at Build A Bear Workshop. The most any one would pay was $29.

Outright brawls were reported among angry people waiting on line in Newcastle, England, The Sun reported.

Images on Spokane media websites showed a similar turnout outside the Spokane Valley store.

At the University Park Mall in Indiana, CBS affiliate WSBT described the line for the Build-A-Bear Workshop store there as "insane".

The Pay Your Age event allows kids to build a bear for the cost of their age.

"It is our honest desire for all of our guests to enjoy the best Build-A-Bear experience possible", the retailer said in a statement. We appreciate everyone's patience and understanding at this time.

Those lines have since been closed, according to posts from Build-a-Bear.

Parents and children turned out in droves Thursday morning to take advantage of a Build-A-Bear Workshop special at the Pinnancle Hills Promenade in Rogers.
