  • Man falls overboard from cruise ship off B.C. coast

The U.S. Coast Guard medevaced an 89-year-old man suffering from a stroke from a Carnival cruise ship on Monday.

A Coast Guard helicopter rescue crew recovered the unresponsive man from the water Tuesday afternoon and flew him to a waiting Emergency Medical Service crew on shore. He was pronounced dead at Olympic Medical Centre.

The United States Coast Guard Pacific Northwest first said on Twitter around 6:40 a.m. that the Captain of the Seven Seas Mariner confirmed a ship video that showed the 73-year-old man went overboard from the eighth deck of the vessel around 4:15 a.m.

The Coast Guard's Puget Sound Command Center had dispatched an aircrew from Port Angeles, two boat crews from Neah Bay, and the Coast Guard cutter Wahoo crew, who were joined by a Canadian Coast Guard helicopter crew in the search.

"Any time we are unable to accomplish our goal of saving lives, we are deeply saddened", said Coast Guard Capt. M.M. Balding in a statement. "Our thoughts are with them in their time of grief".

The Seven Seas Mariner, which had been on a 10-day cruise to Alaska, was headed to Victoria, B.C., before returning to Vancouver, B.C.

At the time the man went overboard, the vessel was in USA waters, just north of Cape Flattery, at the northwestern tip of Washington state's Olympic Peninsula.

The man was last seen by his wife at 4 am who reported that she was woken up by "a breeze coming from the balcony door cracked open".

The cause of the incident is under investigation.
