  • Alleged rhino poachers mauled to death by lions in South Africa

"Clearly, the poachers had walked into a pride of six lions and some, if not all had been killed", according to a Facebook post by Fox.

Human remains found in a South African game reserve are believed to be those of a gang of rhino poachers who ran into a pack of lions.

"They were thinking of spending time in the reserve looking for the rhinos", he said.

On Tuesday afternoon, a field guide alerted the anti-poaching unit that there appeared to be human remains near the area in which the lions reside.

At least three men made their way onto the Sibuya Game Reserve in the early hours of the morning on Monday. During that time, the dog's handler heard a loud commotion coming from the lions.

They later learned the noise was likely the poachers being killed by lions.

"They came heavily armed with hunting rifles and axes which we have recovered and enough food to last them for several days so we suspect they were after all of our rhinos here", he told the Sun.

"Although we will continue to be extremely vigilant we remain positive that this incident will not necessitate any changes to the status quo", he said.

"At Sibuya Game Reserve, we only view game from specialised game-viewing vehicles and not on foot due to the extremely dense bush and this forest on the reserve", Fox said.

Fox said he alerted the Indalo Anti-Poaching Cluster and the local police, which are now combing the area for clues.

When he arrive on the scene, Fox said they discovered the high-powered rifle, gloves, wire cutters and the remains of a back pack that had contained with food and water. According to The South African, there have already been nine rhinos killed this year in the Eastern Cape alone, and investigators have reason to believe that there are two groups of poachers responsible for the killings.
