- Crowds gathered Thursday morning in Cape Canaveral, but not for a space launch.

The two towers, the station's most conspicuous landmarks, were visible from a nearby beach and watched for more than half a century during missile tests and launches that sent spacecraft to the moon and to Mars.

But from May 1960 the towers played a key role in United States spare exploration, launching space missions as part of the Delta I and Delta II space programs.

NASA's first three Mars rovers - Sojourner, Spirit and Opportunity - were launched there, as were dozens of Global Positioning System navigation-related flights and numerous scientific, commercial and military payloads, a report from Space Flight Now said.

In 2004 the first probe to orbit Mercury was also launched from the complex.

The towers were in service for 60 years.

It's been almost seven years since the towers were used in a launch, and was used for Delta II and other notable missions, according to the report.

In 2016 Moon Express was given permission by the US Government to send a robotic lander to the Moon.
