Joaquin Phoenix’s darker, grittier Joker movie officially in the works

  • Joaquin Phoenix has finalized his deal to appear in producer Martin Scorsese's dark take on The Joker origin

Will it be The Joker narrating his own origin to the camera, giving Phoenix most of the film to play outside of any makeup and create a dramatic story that won't feature any insane plots or superhero setpieces?

Phoenix, 43, has previously said he wasn't against taking on the role of the Joker after reports named him as the next actor to personify the sinister comic character.

Official plot details are still under wraps but the Joker origin film is to be a gritty and grounded crime film set in 1980s Gotham City, separate from DC's current shared cinematic universe in an effort to create new and unique storylines as the studio expands DC canon. The Warner Bros. movie reportedly has a budget of only around $55 million, which is well below what other Warner Bros. superhero and villain movies have cost to produce.

Phillips ("The Hangover" franchise) is on board to co-write and direct the movie.

The Joker movie has been a bit of an enigma amongst DC Comics fans, ever since it was first announced in September of previous year. "I wouldn't say... 'I won't do Westerns.' It depends on what it is".

Phoenix is not the only A-lister playing the Clown Prince of Crime either; Jared Leto is also preparing to revisit his interpretation, last seen - albeit fleetingly - in 2016's Suicide Squad. If you have the ability to transcend the genre, then that's what you want to do.

According to THR, Warner Bros.is still developing another Joker project starring Leto.
