  • Moon landing SpaceIL lunar probe

SpaceIL explained: "While the other Google Lunar X Prize teams developed large rovers to move the required 500 meters on the Moon's surface, in order to conserve mass, SpaceIL developed the idea of a space hop: to have the spacecraft land and then take off again with the fuel left in its propulsion system, and then perform another landing 500 meters away".

SpaceIL, an Israeli initiative group for space exploration, announced that as soon as in the end of 2018 the first lunar orbiter will be launched.

To date, the Us remains the only country to have successfully conducted manned missions to the moon, with the last departing the lunar surface in December 1972.

SpaceIL will ship the as yet unnamed module to the United States in November ahead of the launch.

An Israeli non-profit affiliated with the local hi-tech and research communities is planning to launch a spacecraft to the moon as an educational endeavor.

About it reports Reuters with a reference to the Executive Director SpaceIL IDO Anteby. Its maximum speed will reach more than 10 km per second.

Israel announced on Tuesday that it will launch its first lunar mission in December, with the hopes of becoming the fourth country to land a spacecraft on the moon in February 2019. Once the mission is accomplished, the developer said the spacecraft will remain on the moon as a "symbol of Israeli success". In May, China launched a relay satellite that will orbit the moon and allow it to receive signals from a planned probe that will land on the far side of the moon.

At 60,000 kilometers (37,000 miles) above Earth the spacecraft will deploy. If it does manage to reach the Moon, it will be the smallest craft to make a touchdown there. These were the words quoted when Neil Armstrong from the United States of America stepped on Moon for the first time.

This illustration imagines what the spacecraft would look like on the moon. Its two-month journey will start from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

Upon its landing, the spacecraft plans to take photos and video of the landing site while also measuring the moon's magnetic field as part of a Weizmann Institute scientific experiment. The data will be transmitted to the IAI control room during the two days following the landing. The competition ended officially with no victor on March 31, when Google announced that it would no longer sponsor it. This way, they will raise interest in space among the people in Israel, and will also encourage young generations to study STEM.

But SpaceIL has continued to work on its moon mission.
