The boat was purportedly heading for Cyprus, but it lacked necessary equipment to reach the destination, indicating that the mission's true aim may have been to draw media attention as part of the Palestinians' propaganda strategy.

IDF medics provided treatment to the injured people on board the vessel, the army said.

"The damage being caused to agricultural lands in Israel is grave and deplorable, but collectively punishing almost two million people in Gaza by closing its only official crossing for the movement of goods is both illegal and morally depraved", it wrote on Twitter.

Hamas won 2006 legislative elections and effectively booted the Palestinian Authority (PA) from power in Gaza in the wake of an armed conflict with Fatah, the leading party of the PA, after the latter rejected the election results.

Hundreds of people had gathered to see off the boat carrying nine passengers, including four people said to have been wounded by Israeli soldiers along with students. "There will be other steps which I won't detail", he said.

The passengers "with specific needs are prevented from travelling, receiving care, and finishing their studies", said organizer Raed Abu Dair. Tuesday's attempt marks the second try in the past two months to break the blockade.

Lieberman said Israel did not seek a new Gaza flare-up.

Demonstrators demand an end to Israel's decades-long occupation of Palestinian land and its ongoing blockade, which has brought the impoverished Gaza Strip to the verge of humanitarian catastrophe.

According to the Israeli military, the naval blockade is "a necessary and legal security measure" to protect its Israeli citizens "in the face of terror and smuggling weapons". The blockade, which is also enforced by Egypt, has been deemed legal by the United Nations and other worldwide bodies, though it remains hotly contested by many human rights groups.

The move tightens the blockade on Gaza, which has been in place since 2007. The Hamas terrorist organization is responsible for what is happening inside the Gaza Strip and coming out of it. Hamas is dragging the population of Gaza into the abyss, and the Israeli Defense Forces will continue to work to preserve Israel's security interests.

It was the second humanitarian flotilla to set out from Gaza since Palestinians first began holding rallies along the Gaza-Israel security fence on March 30.

Then too the boat was towed to Ashdod. "The seizure was carried out without incident".
