The ball was in Kevin Anderson's court when he defeated Roger Federer on Wednesday to book a semifinal spot in the 2018 Wimbledon. It was a marathon game. Some fans were shocked and awed by the sheer length and absurdity of the contest, while others also voiced a frustration with the first match of the day delaying the real headliner - the semifinal matchup between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic.

The only match to last longer at Wimbledon was Isner's win over Nicolas Mahut in 2010, which ended 70-68 in the fifth set after 11 hours, 5 minutes.

South African Kevin Anderson won the second-longest match in Wimbledon history by outlasting American John Isner to reach the men's final.

Fast food chain Nandos, which originated from South Africa, has pledged to give away free meals to people who share names with the two players, until Anderson is knocked out of the tournament or wins the final.

The 32-year-old Anderson triumphed 7-6 (8/6), 6-7 (5/7), 6-7 (9/11), 6-4, 26-24 after six hours and 36 minutes on Centre Court.

The Isner-Anderson match was the first Grand Slam men's semifinal to go past 6-all in the deciding set since the 2013 French Open, and the first at Wimbledon since 2001.

Anderson, who graduated from the University of IL, came through another marathon match to beat Roger Federer in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, winning their fifth set 13-11.

The eighth seed will face either twice champion Rafael Nadal or three-times victor Novak Djokovic in Sunday's final.

Ultimately, it was Anderson who prevailed, taking the match 7-6, 6-7, 6-7, 6-4, 26-24.

The former Bulldog broke right back to even the set once again.

He couldn´t capitalise, however, and was broken straight back before Isner claimed the ensuing tiebreak having saved two set points.

Isner did, however, break the record of the most serves at a tournament - beating Goran Ivanisevic's 213 on his way to the Wimbledon back in 2001.
