HTC’s blockchain smartphone will launch this year

  • HTC's blockchain-powered Exodus smartphone will be released this year

The company has signaled that it is making good progress on plans to launch a blockchain-powered phone, betting the technology can help it disrupt the status quo in the smartphone sector as the world prepares for 5G. It will represent the company's first push towards creating a decentralized app store.

Yesterday, the HTC executive told The Verge that Exodus's blockchain support will come in the form of an in-house crypto wallet and a CryptoKitties service integration.

HTC also plans to tie up with Bitmark and other developers to develop related products for the build-up of the blockchain ecosystem, Chen said.

It's not the first time we hear about HTC's upcoming blockchain smartphone, also known as Exodus, and not to be confused with the Exodus cryptocurrency wallet.

CryptoKitties is now only available on desktop operating systems, and HTC's downloadable app would be the world's first mobile version of the collectible game, a company spokesperson said.

The smartphone, which was announced in May without a timeline for release, now has more details published on its dedicated website, including a confirmation of its arrival in the third quarter of this year.

Latest IDC numbers reveal HTC shipped around 630,000 units in Q1 this year, versus around 2 million the year before.

What's Your Thought On This?, Let Us Know In the Comment section Below.

Back in May, Phil Chen, HTC Chief Crypto Office said, "We envision a phone where you hold your own keys, you own your own identity and data, and your phone is the hub". I'm excited about the opportunity it brings to decentralize the internet and reshape it for the modern user.

While HTC says The Exodus will have a "cold storage wallet", The Block was more interested in the company's focus on facilitating the distribution of dapps (decentralised applications), which it rationally believes, will find their place on mobile.

The partnership with CryptoKitties will see the game "available on a small selection of the company's handsets starting with the U12+".

What do you think of CryptoKitties being put on HTC devices?

Originally announced in May without a price, date or specs, the Exodus phone sounded a bit like a desperate last effort to make HTC, which laid off 22 percent of its workforce earlier this month, relevant in the smartphone business again.
