Named Dunant, after Henri Dunant, the first Nobel Peace Prize victor and founder of the Red Cross, the cable is expected to become available in late 2020, Google's Strategic Negotiator Jayne Stowell wrote in a blog post on Tuesday.

Google is buying a trans-Atlantic cable, names projects after innovators
"Dunant adds network capacity across the Atlantic, supplementing one of the busiest routes on the internet, and supporting the growth of Google Cloud", wrote Google's strategic negotiator of global infrastructure, Jayne Stowell.
Neither Google nor TE SubCom stated the capacity of Dunant, but the builder said it will use four fibre pairs. The cables are generally meant to improve the performance of the company's cloud computing infrastructure, with Curie being the first subsea cable commissioned by a major non-telecommunications company, PC Mag wrote. These were our Alpha and Beta cables (a nod to how we name software releases), and their success led us to build both Curie and Dunant privately. Curie, named after the scientist Marie Curie, will be Google's own private cable, while Havfrue, which is Danish for "mermaid, and HK-G are consortium cables the company is building alongside others".
"Cables are often built to serve a very specific route". "When we build privately, we can choose this route based on what will provide the lowest latency for the largest segment of customers".
Google explains that there are several options when it comes to building subsea cables: purchase capacity from an existing cable, or one being built by someone else; create a consortium of partners and build a cable together; or build one yourself.
